I've got to spend more time reading books.

I added a page for books I've read this year. I've decided I want to encourage a reading habit. This might seem weird to people who know me since I already have a reading habit! But I don't read a lot of fiction anymore and I used to, when I was younger.

Reading fiction is a different skill, I think. A lot of the nonfiction I read, I don't necessarily read the whole book, or if I do, it might not be in order. I go back and reread parts and highlight it. It's easy to put it down and pick it up in short intervals. But for fiction, you read the story from the beginning to the end, and that's is a skill I worry I've let become a little underdeveloped. It actually requires more of an attention span than nonfiction even though we tend to think of nonfiction as "harder", "more serious" reading material.

We think that because it's not "learning" material, but I learned most of what I came to consider fundamental life lessons from my favorite books as a kid, books like Tom Sawyer and the Lord of the Rings. So I hope I'll learn more things like that this year, even at the advanced age of 40.
